Case Study: Thermal Analysis of a Brass Threaded Insert

Inserts were found to have exhibited cracking after being heated and inserted into a nylon moulding. Finite element transient thermal analysis was used to simulate the rapid induction heating of the thread of the insert.

The contour plot above shows the calculated temperature distribution within the brass after just 1/10th second.
The plot above shows the temperature distribution after half a second.
The plot above shows the temperature distribution after one second.
These temperature distributions were used to calculate the magnitude of the thermal stress cycle created within the region of crack initiation.
