Case Study: Strain and Stress Analysis of a 4th Rail Negative Shoe

A detailed finite element model of the shoe was created using 10-noded parabolic solid elements. Particular mesh detail was included over four "patches" within the frangible section, which represented the areas covered by the grids of the strain gauges installed by D.A.T.S. Ltd.

Analysis of the patch elements allowed the model strains to be related directly to the strains measured by D.A.T.S. Ltd on track. This provided a validation for the FEA - predicted stress concentrations that would be used in the subsequent fatigue analysis.
