Case Study: Structural Analysis of an Airport Service Trailer
A new design of airport trailer was analysed by finite element analysis. Beam and plate elements were used to model the structure, which also included the tow-bar and suspension.
The structure was subjected to various load cases, including personnel and equipment payload, vehicle cornering and extreme wind gust loading.
Eigenvalue/eigenvector analysis was used to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the suspension and to study the behaviour of the trailer under secondary towing conditions.
ABMech made recommendations for design improvements to fatigue-critical details. The model was modified and re-run to confirm the effectiveness of the changes.
